Young volunteers scheme at Fairwater Leisure Centre

The Street Games Young Volunteers scheme forms part of the Fairwater and Pentrebane Active Opportunities Project which provides the opportunity for volunteers aged between 16-20 to receive accredited training to help at community based projects and thereby gain beneficial nationally recognised qualifications.

The project which is funded by Safer Cardiff via the Transforming Neighbourhood Tasking scheme aims to give volunteers from the local community accredited training whilst enabling the volunteers to develop new skills, gain experience and confidence, enhance their CV, so leading to possible career development in the health, education or leisure services field.

The 13 volunteers from the local community have successfully completed various courses and workshops such as employability, emergency first aid and safeguarding and child protection which has enabled them to be actively involved in helping out at community based activities. The programme is also designed so volunteers can gain additional nationally recognised qualifications. These can include NPLQ’s, Gym Instructors, Fork Lift Truck Driving, First Aid at Work and car driving lessons which will help with employability and develop their skills further. The volunteers will shortly be completing a community sports leader, football leader and TAG rugby leader awards which will then enable the volunteers to gain skills and experience in coaching.

The volunteers assist during Street Games sessions by supervising activities which are available free of charge at Fairwater Leisure Centre. Street Games is an action packed programme held every Tuesday and Thursday between 4.30-6pm which provides a variety of activities free to children aged between 10-15 ranging from football to basketball and street dance to cheerleading.

Cllr. Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture said “We are pleased to be able to utilise funding from Safer Cardiff to help the volunteers with an important start to their career development. These educational and training opportunities demonstrate the Council’s long-term commitment to provide beneficial training and development opportunities to young people.”
