Your chance to be the judge

How often has a headline like ‘Local Thug Walks Free After Hospitalising Victim’ enraged your sense of fairness?

Community Volunteers from across Caerphilly county borough are looking forward to a lively and interactive presentation on Community Sentencing next week. It is your chance to see the facts behind the headlines and see first hand how decisions are reached.

The Safer Caerphilly Volunteer Network will receive the presentation from the Local Crime Community Sentence (LCCS) team on Monday 25th October at 6pm at Penallta House, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters.

The LCCS project is a joint venture by magistrates and probation officers to increase the knowledge and understanding of community sentences.

The presentation includes a description of an offender and a crime they have committed, and a discussion about the possible options. They then offer the group the opportunity to be ‘the judge’; sentencing the offender and deciding whether prison or a community sentence is most appropriate.

Local Crime Community Sentence (LCCS), gives the community the opportunity to find out more about the Sentencing process in Court and Community Sentences in particular.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman (pictured), Cabinet Member for the Environment, which incorporates community safety said, “It is a great opportunity to see the system in action and for people to gain knowledge of an enigmatic subject “, and she also believes that the volunteer network in Caerphilly is “something to be proud of.”

She continued, “We are always looking for new ways that our dedicated volunteers can contribute and use their local knowledge and commitment to help us achieve our goal of making Caerphilly county borough an even safer place to live.”

The Safer Caerphilly Volunteer Network is a group of dedicated volunteers comprised of active members of the community, including Community Crime Fighters, Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators, Tenants and Residents Association representatives, Community Partnerships and Crime Prevention Panel members.

This group of dedicated volunteers act as the vital direct link between crime and disorder fighting agencies and the communities they serve in Caerphilly county borough.

Anyone interested in joining this ever-growing community volunteer network is invited to come along and take part in what should be an eye-opening and enjoyable event.
