Your chance to get an insight into Fforestfach fire

Residents and businesses affected by the Fforestfach fire are being offered the chance to meet the organisations that responded to the incident at a special event on Sunday.

Local pople will have the chance to gain an insight into the one of the most complex fires in Wales that affected the former Mettoys factory in Fforestfach for three weeks.

On show at the Fforestfach Park and Ride site between 11am and 4pm on August 7 will be previously unseen video footage and photographs. People will also have a bird’s eye view of the site where the fire took place.

Approximately 5,000 tonnes of tyre flock, a by-product of tyre recycling, had burned for three weeks at the former Mettoys factory on Fforestfach Industrial Estate.

The burning material had to be removed using specialist plant equipment and immersed in temporary dams created on site and large water-filled containers.

Roger Thomas, Group Manager at Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, praised the community for their understanding during the fire-fighting operation.

And he said Sunday’s event was an opportunity for the organisations involved in the work to thank local people for their support and explain how the fire was put out.

He added: “There was a great team effort from all of the agencies and the fire was put out quicker than we initially anticipated.

“The site has been demolished and cleared which gives us an opportunity to invite the public along to meet those agencies involved in dealing with the fire so that they can learn more about what happened.

“It’s also an opportunity for residents and businesses in the area to share their experiences with us. We hope people will come along and gain an insight into this very unusual incident and the way we responded to it.”

The multi-agency response group brought together Swansea Council, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Police, Environment Agency Wales, Public Health Wales and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.
