AM raises statement of opinion to congratulate Team Wales on Commonwealth Games efforts

Shadow Minister for Equality Mohammad Asghar has raised a Statement of Opinion at the National Assembly for Wales congratulating all of Wales’ Commonwealth Games medal winners on their successes.

The South Wales East AM has also used the Statement of Opinion to pay tribute to all of Team Wales’ participants, coaches and officials for their involvement at the Games – and also to welcome all support shown for Team Wales during the tournament.

Mr Asghar said: “It gives me great pleasure to raise this Statement of Opinion. The hard work and endeavour of Team Wales at the Games was fantastic and I am delighted that we came home from New Delhi with 19 medals”.

In the Senedd on Tuesday, Mr Asghar responded to a statement from Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones about the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Mr Asghar said: “The Commonwealth Games are a terrific event and I am sure that, like me, other Members enjoyed following the action in New Delhi.

“Wales has a proud history in the Games. I understand that we are one of only six nations to have participated in them all”.

He asked the Minister how he plans to “work with Sport Wales to ensure that we embrace the close proximity of the Glasgow games (in 2014) and ensure maximum success for Wales”, adding that he felt it was essential to “utilise Wales’s involvement in the Games to increase sporting participation in … Wales”.

Mr Asghar also took the opportunity to highlight comments made earlier in the year by the Minister, where he had said his officials would take advantage of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi to meet with countries that had expressed an interest in basing in Wales their pre-games training camps for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

He reminded the Minister that “many nations have said that they would focus attention on their pre-games training destinations for London 2012 after the Commonwealth Games” and asked for an update on progress made.
