Bourne: Wales’ pensioners let down by WAG

Welsh Conservatives today confronted the Assembly Government over support for vulnerable elderly people.

Speaking in the Assembly Chamber, Leader of the Opposition Nick Bourne AM challenged the First Minister over the Assembly Government’s commitment to pensioners in Wales.

Commenting on the exchange, Mr Bourne said:

“The Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has detailed that the number of pensioners living in poverty has risen to 160,000; something the First Minister disagreed with in his response to me today.

“This means that one in four pensioners in Wales are now living in poverty, which is far more than in other parts in the UK.

“The First Minister and the Assembly Government are letting pensioners in Wales down by refusing to acknowledge the enormity of the problem.

“It is typical of the attitude of complacency we have come to expect from the First Minister and his colleagues.”
