£2.4 million Caernarfon improvements go on show

The latest details about major improvements for Caernarfon town centre will be on display this weekend.

The plans are part of Gwynedd Council’s £2.4 million regeneration project which will aim to make it easier for people to get in and around the town, as well as improving the look and feel of many of Caernarfon’s main streets. An exhibition outlining a series of improvements which will be undertaken in the town will be held on the Maes on Friday, 22 October and Saturday, 23 October.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, who leads on the Environment on Gwynedd Council said:

“These are exciting times for Caernarfon, and we are confident that the series of improvements which will be on display on the Maes on Friday and Saturday will provide a real boost for the town.

“Work has already been completed on one aspect of the improvements with the new electronic signs which are in place making it easier for motorists to find parking spaces in the town’s car parks. The further improvements will also help to make it easier for people to get around Caernarfon on foot and by car.

“These changes will help to reinforce the message that Caernarfon is a fantastic place to visit.”

The outline plans prepared by consultants Gillespies follow feedback from local residents and businesses gathered as part of two public consultation events held in the town along with discussions held with various key local groups. The key changes will see improvements to the town’s bus station at Poolside, widening pavements and improving levels at various areas in Bangor Street and improvements to Pool Street’s surface.

More detailed plans will be on show for Bridge Street where work is expected to get underway in January 2011. Improvements include widening pavements, improving the entrance into the Maes, installing a new taxi rank, improving links along Skinner Street to nearby car parks and, following consultation with access groups, installing a new controlled crossing.

Dafydd Wyn Williams, Gwynedd Council’s Chief Engineer Transportation and Street Care added:

“Next year is going to be a busy one in Caernarfon when these exciting projects begin. Keeping people informed is going to be vitally important, and that’s why we will be arranging for a project office to be in place by then, located on Bangor Street so that people can drop in if they have any queries on the projects.”

The exhibition held on the Maes which will be open to members of the public will be open from 11am to 4pm on Friday, 22 October and Saturday, 23 October.

The project is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through European Union’s Convergence programme administered by the Welsh Assembly Government.
