Local And National Unsigned Acts Gather To Highlight Homelessness And Raise Funds For Shelter Cymru On The Back Of The “Rage Against The Machine Christmas Number One Campaign.”
A group of Facebook friends who met as part of the Rage Against The Machine for Christmas number one campaign are hosting a weekend of live music from the 16th April on the edge of the Brecon Beacons in order to raise money for Shelter Cymru – Wales’ homelessness charity. Jon and Tracy Morter’s Christmas Facebook campaign raised over £105 000 for Shelter UK but, as a separate entity, Shelter Cymru did not directly benefit from these donations. In order to raise funds for Shelter Cymru itself, as well as to promote the best unsigned acts from around the country, organisers have brought eleven musicians and bands to the Ancient Briton pub, Penycae, to “rage” against homelessness in Wales.
Shelter Cymru report that mortgage repossessions in Wales have trebled in the last three years, and they have rarely been so busy handling over 18 000 housing problems last year alone. Where people faced homelessness, the charity managed to keep a roof over their heads in almost 90% of cases. As with all charities, every donation helps with their work. When a few of the people who participated in Jon and Tracy Morter’s Facebook group learned that Shelter Cymru didn’t benefit from the donations raised for Shelter through the Christmas number one, they began to organise a small music event to raise at least some funds towards the Welsh charity. Next year they plan to organise a proper-sized festival with the same aim in mind.
With highly acclaimed acts such as “The Gubbins”, “Kinasis”, Nicky Swann and Jess Childs performing at the Ancient Briton for free, the organisers aim to raise much-needed funds for Shelter Cymru and highlight the best unsigned talent from Wales and beyond.
