Pupils at Llangwm VC School have been congratulated on achieving the Silver Sustainable Schools Award.
They were presented with the award by Councillor Huw George, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Learning and the Welsh Language, at a special assembly this week.
During the assembly, pupils from across the school shared what they had been learning and the practical action they have taken to achieve the award.
The school gained their award for work on the topics Waste and Litter, Transport and Water.
Their work included growing potatoes, a visit to the Withyhedge recycling centre to see what happens to the orange bags, a campaign to improve road safety outside their school, and clearing litter from local areas including the local graveyard and sports ground.
The children also studied the large global challenges we face such as climate change and poverty, and how they link to local choices.
Pupils have already started a campaign to encourage parents, pupils and teachers to take part in the Liftshare day on June 14th.
In their work towards the award, the school has been supported by parents and the local community as well as Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Darwin Science, Keep Wales Tidy, Pembrokeshire County Council, Puffin Produce and many others.
Staff and pupils are now setting their sights on the Gold award, and are hoping to join the eight other schools in the County who have already achieved this outstanding standard.
Mr Nick Groves, Headteacher, said the children and staff at Llangwm Primary had thoroughly enjoyed undertaking a wide range of sustainable activities to achieve the Silver Award.
“As a school we have built several sustainable projects into the curriculum for each class,” he said.
“We have also encouraged the children to undertake whole school projects linked to areas such as recycling and the development of an organic school vegetable garden,” added Mr Groves.
“The knowledge, skills and values gained through the work have benefited all the children and allowed them to recognise the importance of sustainability both now and in the future.”
