Pupils and staff at Ty Isaf Infants & Nursery School celebrated the perfect way to end the school term by receiving the Platinum Eco School award.
Last Friday 18th July Ty Isaf School welcomed Keep Wales Tidy Officer Matthew Bunt to the school to present their Platinum Eco School award – the highest accolade in the Eco Schools programme.
The school’s Eco Committee have implemented changes to save energy, water and electricity. Pupils harbour the green philosophy ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’, and ensure different types of waste are recycled in the correct manner.
Pupils are encouraged to eat healthy meals at lunch times, and fruit is made available as a snack at break time.
Meanwhile, areas of the school grounds have been allowed to grow to encourage ‘mini beasts’ to occupy the area, while children are responsible for ensuring that the school and its grounds are tidy and litter free.
The school’s Platinum Eco School award was particularly poignant as the presentation coincided with the retirement of the school’s Eco Co-ordinator Mrs Carol Cooke, who leaves the school after 26 years.
Cllr Ken James, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning & Sustainable Development, said: “The staff and pupils at Ty Isaf Infants & Nursery School have shown an outstanding commitment to caring for the environment – and I congratulate them on their efforts.
“I’m sure the children will take what they’ve learned home with them over the holidays and ensure their families and friends are ‘reducing, reusing and recycling’ all summer.”
