AM outlines importance of consultation on school closures

Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies has outlined the importance of holding full consultations before school closures go ahead.

Mr Davies, who is also shadow Welsh Education Minister, told the Senedd that it is vital proper inquiries are made before schools are closed.

“It is fundamental that we ensure that before a school is closed, a proper and robust consultation process is conducted,” he said.

“The Assembly Government needs to establish a clearer schools closure strategy that listens to all concerns and ensures that all children in Wales are able to access a first class education.”

The Welsh Conservatives tabled a motion calling for full consideration to be given to a school’s standard of education, to the importance of the school within the community and to the impact of new houses being built in the area would have on its viability.

“Time after time, as I travel around Wales, I’m told that schools are earmarked for closure by councils with no regard for planned housing developments which could improve their viability,” said Mr Davies.

“And that consultation processes on closures are futile, doing nothing more than going through the motions before presenting a fait accompli.

“We need joined up thinking and consultation processes that force education authorities to listen to the voice of the communities they serve.

“I would urge the Minister to re-evaluate the current consultation process with immediate effect.”
