AM Slams Decision to Cut Winter Fuel Allowance

Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert has slammed the Tory-led UK Government’s decision to cut Winter Fuel Allowance in last week’s Budget.

Winter Fuel Allowance has been cut from £250 to £200 for the over 60s and from £400 to £300 for the over 80s – despite Prime Minister David Cameron making a personal ‘pledge’ to pensioners before the last General Election that they were safe.

Jeff Cuthbert AM said: “This cut to Winter Fuel Allowance was deviously included in the Budget small print at a time when energy bills are rising and older people’s purchasing power is falling.

“Labour warned people of the Tories’ intentions before the last General Election and David Cameron accused us of “lies, lies, lies”. Perhaps the same could now be said of him.

“What worries me most is that this could be the start of a slippery slope towards the Allowance’s full abolition. Only Labour has consistently stood up for Wales in the past and it is clear that only this will be the case in the future.”
