AM Welcomes Funding to Build New Homes in Wrexham

Lesley_GriffithsWrexham looks set to receive over £1.3m of Welsh Government funding to help support building and refurbishing affordable new homes in the area.

The announcement will provide welcome support to many residents and has been hailed by local AM Lesley Griffiths.

The Social Housing Grant provides valuable funding for local authorities and housing associations across Wales, ultimately aiming to deliver new affordable housing for rent or low cost home ownership.

In Wrexham, Social Housing Grant has assisted with the development of a number of new housing developments along with supported housing schemes for people with learning disabilities and mental health issues.

A prime example is the recent development in Hightown. Last year, a partnership of Wales and West Housing Association and Wrexham Council helped deliver almost 150 new homes, plus a community and medical resource centre, with the support of £6.6m from the Social Housing Grant.

Overall, the Welsh Government funding for the Grant is expected to total £58m over the next financial year.

Wrexham Assembly Member Ms Griffiths said:

“The Social Housing Grant plays a valuable role in contributing to the supply of affordable housing.”

“It helps create sustainable communities and provides welcome support to many people, both locally and nationally.”

“Over £1.3m of funding has been earmarked for Wrexham over the next financial year and judging by the recent housing development in Hightown, I am sure the Grant will have a positive impact throughout the area.”
