Nia Greville clinched the Welsh Girls golf title to round off a perfect week which included qualifying for the stages as the No1 seed.
The 17-year-old from Ashburnham Golf Club, Pembrey, played well all week in Caernarfon and managed to maintain her strokeplay form through the matchplay stages, beating Huddersfield’s Megan Lockett 2 and 1 in the final.Ysgol y Strade, Llanelli, schoolgirl Greville was delighted to win the title in her last year before moving up to the Ladies and was also delighted to be picked in the Wales Girls team for the Home Internationals in St Anne’s next month.
Greville beat Rebecca Ogden from Rhuddlan in the semi-final, while Lockett came through against Jordan Ryan of Newport at that stage.
“It was fabulous to win, I was delighted to keep my cool and hold my nerve to carry on playing well,” said Greville.
“I played well in the strokeplay section but the matchplay stage is different. Winning the strokeplay can seem a bit like winning the Par 3 contest at the Masters, you do not go on to win the main thing.
“I was nervous going through the rounds, feeling that as a Wales team player and the No1 seed I should do well. Once I reached the final I was able to relax more than at any other stage, the main pressure was to get there.
“It was really good to win in my last year as a junior, so I wanted to give it my all to finish with a bang.”
Greville was able to take advantage of similarities with home course Ashburnham, with the need to keep it straight on a links course certainly helping in Caernarfon.
“Ashburnham can be really hard and I was able to transfer that to playing in Caernarfon, which helped,” she said.
“My coach John Peters has also been a big help. Then to hear I had been picked in the Wales Girls team was the icing on the cake, now we will aim to do well there.”
