Bishop’s statement on future of Christ Church Aberbeeg

In response to public interest in the future of Christ Church, Aberbeeg, the Bishop of Monmouth, the Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, has said:

“I have read reports in the South Wales Argus and also received letters concerning the future of Christ Church, Aberbeeg.  As yet, I have not received any official notification from the secretary of the Parochial Church Council requesting me to make the church redundant.  When I do so, I shall begin the process which will be as follows:

“The Archdeacon or I will meet with members of the Church Council to discuss their reasons for their request.  I shall need to know the size and age profile of the congregation, their financial circumstances and the likely cost of repairs to the church building.  If I consider that it is not viable for the Church Council to maintain the church, the Archdeacon or I shall be pleased to meet with other members of the congregation and people from the local community to see if they can produce a viable business plan to retain the church for worship and community use.

“I welcome the support shown by interested parties in wishing to retain Christ Church and I shall not make any decision regarding redundancy until there has been an opportunity, within an agreed time frame, to see if an alternative solution can be found.”
