Bourne: More action needed to combat lagging economy

Welsh Conservatives today challenged the Assembly Government over the Welsh economy’s lagging productivity levels.

Speaking in the Assembly Chamber, Leader of the Opposition Nick Bourne AM questioned the First Minister over the country’s inability to compete with other areas of the UK

Commenting on the exchange, Mr Bourne said:

“We know that productivity in England and Scotland rose between 2002 and 2008, while there was a less than 1% decline in Northern Ireland. Levels in Wales fell by 6%.

“Yet again, Wales is falling behind its UK counterparts.

“The First Minister said that he wants Wales to be an attractive place to invest and grow business but he and his colleagues are not doing enough to encourage productivity levels to improve.

“The Assembly Government needs to show strong leadership and provide constructive solutions if it really is committed to driving Wales’ economic recovery.”
