Caernarfon school project another step closer

A Design Fair will be held at Ysgol yr Hendre, Caernarfon on Wednesday, 7 April between 6 and 9pm.

This is another step forwards in Gwynedd Council’s £6.9 million project to build a new school instead of Ysgol yr Hendre. This will be an opportunity for pupils, parents, teachers and governors, as well as the wider community, to see the plans for the new school.

Archaeological work has been carried out on proposed sites over the past few months and Gwynedd Council can now confirm that the new school will be built at Cae Phillips, near the A4085 Llanbeblig Road. Further archaeological work to prepare the site will be carried out over the coming weeks.

This latest step could not have been achieved without the help and support of local landowner George Denham and developers Watkin Jones, which have agreed to release land in their ownership to allow the Council to create an access to the site from Llanbeblig Road.

The school’s head teacher, Arwel Jones, said: “The new school will provide the children of Peblig and Seiont with educational facilities fit for the 21st century. We are confident that the new school will not only benefit the children but will also provide the best facilities for teachers to do their jobs.

“It will also provide a base specialist support services for pupils and their families as well as community related facilities.”

Councillor Liz Saville Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Education Portfolio Leader, said: “We are delighted that the next step in the process has been achieved and are grateful for the community spirit of all the partners involved – the school’s parents, governors and teachers; the landowner and developer as well as the archaeological team.”

The chairman of the school governors, Councillor Roy Owen, added: “This shows what can be achieved by people working together and we are looking forward to see this project come off the ground as it will provide the local community with a much needed boost.

“I would urge local people to come to this event to get a taste of what the new school will have to offer.”

The project architects JIG Architects will be attending the event and will be available to talk to members of the public.
