Chair of the Council supports Paralympic hopeful Beverley Jones

Chair of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Hilary McGuill, gave her support to Deeside-based Paralympic hopeful Beverley Jones when they met recently at County Hall, Mold.

Beverley has won countless medals in her 12 year sporting career. She was a World Champion in the shot putt at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships in the Netherlands, and a silver medallist in the discus at this year’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. At the same event, she also set a new European record of 30.62m in the F37 discus. Last month alone she won seven medals at the Welsh Championships and recently won a gold (in discus) and a bronze (shot putt) at the International German Open 2011.

Beverley has already achieved her qualifying distance for the 2012 Paralympics in the shot putt and discus, but she will have to requalify again three months before the Paralympics begin.

Councillor Hilary McGuill said:

“I’m so proud to have met Beverley. She’s amazing and I wish her all the success in the world, and for her to be World Number One.”

Beverley said:

“With my wins at the Welsh Championships last month, and achieving gold and bronze in Germany recently, I really feel like I am continuously improving and that my hard work is paying off! My goal now is a gold at the London Paralympics.”
