Council to proceed with statutory notices on future of two Denbigh schools

Denbighshire County Council is to publish a statutory notice outlining plans to amalgamate Ysgol Gwaenynog and Ysgol Heulfre in Denbigh.

At a meeting of the Council’s Cabinet today (Tuesday), Members approved to  publicise a statutory notice to close both schools on 31 August 2012 and to establish a new all-through primary school on the site of the existing schools from 1 September 2012.

Consultation on the proposal took place between 9 May and 24 June, with 12 responses received.

10 of those were in favour, one against and one did not express a view. Meetings also took place with staff, governors, parents and with wider community representatives.

Councillor Eryl Williams, Cabinet Lead Member for Education, said: “Modernising education is one of the key priorities for the Council. We are looking at providing the best education possible for our children and young people county whilst taking into account the best use of resources.

“Officers have considered the issues that were raised during this consultation and have concluded that proceeding with the statutory notice to amalgamate both schools is the correct decision based on educational arguments.

“It is expected that the statutory notice will be published in early September and people will have a month to make any comments. Should no objections be received, the matter will then be decided by the Council. If objections are raised, then the matter will be decided by the Welsh Government.
