Come and learn about services for older people in Gwynedd

The Gwynedd Older People’s Council will hold their annual conference on Friday, 28 October. It will be an opportunity to learn about what’s being done to improve services for older people and to hear about schemes aimed at extending good practices.

Ruth Marks, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, will be the keynote speaker at the conference, which is to be held at Y Ganolfan community centre, Porthmadog. Delegates will have the chance to share with the commissioner their experiences and concerns during a question and answers session.

Also during the conference, a report on the findings of the recent Dignity in Local Care Charter will be launched. This follows a process of asking service users and various authorities about services for older people, and detailed research was carried out on how services could be improved for the benefit of users and their carers and families.

Other highlights of the day include:

  • Presentations about dignity in care
  • Speakers representing Gwynedd’s Older People’s Council, Age Cymru and Gwynedd Council
  • Gwerfyl Wyn Roberts, Senior Lecturer at Bangor University discussing the importance of the Welsh language in care
  • Dr Christine Dobbs discussing care at the end of life.

There will be a number of information stalls to be seen on the day offering advice to people regarding their rights and the services available to them.

Janet Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Health Social Care and Well-Being Coordinator, said:

“The day is open to anyone over the age of 50 and living in Gwynedd. I would call on anyone who wants to find out more about the services available to them and the work conducted to improve provisions, to join us at Porthmadog.

“During the last year extensive work has been carried out to see how organisations which carry out services for older people – for instance the Council, the health services and the voluntary sector – can improve what they do. The conference is an opportunity to celebrate this and to explore further work which can be carried out in this important field.”

The conference will be held at Y Ganolfan, Porthmadog on Friday 28 October from 9.45am onwards. Admission is free and lunch will be provided free of charge during a break at 1pm. Delegates must book their place before Tuesday, 25 October by phoning Lowri Haf Evans on 01286 679731.
