Figures show close to one and half million books have been issued by the Swansea Library Service in 2010.
The statistics for January to November this year show about 1,365,000 book issues at libraries across the city.
Figures also show about 60,000 DVDs and 17,000 CDs were also issued.
The most popular book issued since the start of October is The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. The Girl who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson and Cross Fire by James Patterson also make the top five.
The most borrowed CD during the same timeframe is Sunny Side Up by Paolo Nutini and the most borrowed DVD is Robin Hood with Russell Crowe. The Prince of Persia with Jake Gyllenhaal is also in the top three.
Among Swansea’s network of libraries is the state-of-the-art Central Library in the Civic Centre. Figures published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) earlier this year show the attraction issued the most items in Wales in 2009/2010 and the sixth most items in the UK.
Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “It’s always interesting to find out what the most popular books, CDs and DVDs are in our city and it’s great news to see that our libraries have again been very well-used in 2010.
“The range and volume of stock is hugely impressive and what libraries do is offer a free or very cheap service to people during these difficult financial times.
“But it’s not just about books, CDs and DVDs. Free access to the internet, community groups and many other activities are among those people can benefit from simply by popping into their community library.”
