Davies: Public safety must be paramount in food hygiene scheme

Welsh Conservatives have raised concerns over delays to the roll out of a scheme to grade food outlets across Wales on their hygiene levels.

Commenting on Consumer Focus Wales’ concerns that the ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme would not be fully operational until 2012, Shadow Health Minister Andrew RT Davies AM said:

“It is deeply disappointing that the ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme will not be comprehensively rolled out until 2012.

“We heard earlier this year from that not enough action was being taken to implement the recommendations of the Pennington Review into the 2005 e.coli outbreak.

“Today’s comments from Consumer Focus Wales suggest that a backwards step has been taken and there is still a lack of progress in taking the situation forward.

“While I recognise that the scheme must be robust and make take time to develop, we must not lose slight of that fact that there is a duty to protect consumers in Wales.

“We all know that the 2005 e.coli outbreak had tragic consequences and we must learn the lessons to prevent similar avoidable tragedies in the future.

“I would urge the Minister to ensure that Local Authorities and the Food Standards Agency are working together effectively to ensure that public safety is paramount.”
