Davies: Traffic chaos sign of failure to invest

Commenting on the continuing disruption for motorists travelling on the M4 around Newport following yesterday’s fire in the Brynglas tunnels, Byron Davies AM, Shadow Minister for Transport said:

“Ministers need to work closely with the authorities to complete their thorough investigations and repair work so Wales’ main arterial route can fully reopen as soon as possible to limit the damage to the economies of Newport and South Wales.

“This stretch of the M4 is a major bottleneck during normal rush hour periods, but further strain will have a damaging impact on hauliers, businesses and, at the height of the Welsh tourist season, small tourism operators.

“The current traffic chaos is a direct result of the failure of the Welsh Labour Government to invest in an M4 relief road during the years of plenty.

“Now when public money is in short supply, our economy is losing out on vital investment because Wales’ transport network is incapable of meeting current and future capacity.”
