Denbighshire older residents offered a helping hand

Denbighshire County Council has launched a new short term housing –  related support service for older people called Law Yn Llaw (Hand in Hand).

The service is designed to help older people live independently both at home and in the community. It is run by the Council’s Housing Services department and funded through the Supporting People Programme.

The service is based around short term support designed to give people the confidence to do as many things as possible on their own rather than people doing it on their behalf. The service can last for a maximum of 12 weeks.

It will be able to help with:

  • Sorting out budgets and paying the bills
  • Looking at ways to continue shopping / and or setting up shopping delivery service looking at ways cooking and other household skills can be maintained by doing other things differently or with aids and adaptations.
  • Checking and addressing safety concerns in the home
  • Sorting out servicing of appliances
  • Making appointments to other organisations who can help
  • Helping people keep in contact with the wider community, including clubs and societies they may be interested in.

Duncan Jones, Denbighshire’s Housing Tenancy Manager, said: “With an ageing population in Denbighshire, we are fully aware that people want to remain as independent as possible in their own homes for as long as possible.  The Council is responding to this change by adapting the way in which it offers its services.

“The Law yn Llaw service aims to support people to feel safe and secure in their own home and within the community, giving people the chance to manage their health and well-being and providing opportunities for them to extend their skills, interests and friendships.”
