Using Stories to Connect Communities

The next George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling annual symposium on Storytelling and Translation will take place at the University of Glamorgan’s Atrium campus in Cardiff on 6th and 7th May 2011.

The keynote lecture on Friday 6th May will be given by Dr Joseph Winston from the University of Warwick who will discuss how sharing stories could help us to get on better with each other.

Conference organiser Emily Underwood-Lee said, “Stories give us a space in which to exchange and share, to create empathy and to explore differences. We have chosen Storytelling and Translation as the theme for this year’s symposium and aim to interpret this in the broadest possible sense. We hope the symposium will provide a space to reflect on a broad range of translations, adaptations and to engage with issues of place, medium, language, and cultures to name just a few.”

The symposium will engage with both academic and practice led debates about how story can engage with these issues. Other speakers include Dr Marta Minier (University of Glamorgan), Arti Prashar (Theatre Director and Storyteller) and Professor Mike Wilson (University College Falmouth).

The keynote lecture on the Friday evening is free but booking is essential, places at the symposium are priced at £30 (full price) or £20 (unwaged).

The George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling is dedicated to promoting, developing and researching storytelling in all its forms.  It has grown over the last six years and now has a significant range of activities from small events with community groups through to major international partnerships and research projects.
