Denbighshire school celebrates 50 years and IIP first

Ysgol Twm o’r Nant in Denbigh has lots of reasons to celebrate this month.

Not only have the pupils and teachers of the Welsh medium junior school buried a time capsule in recognition of its 50th birthday, but they have been presented with not one but two awards from Investors in People.

The time capsule was buried on the school grounds on 25 June, to be unearthed again in 25 years’ time.  The school council decided what would go in the capsule.  Contents included copies of local papers, school uniform, reading books, school prospectus, school letters, a DVD of school activities and the school assembly on the day the capsule was buried as well as photographs and a list of all current pupils.

Headteacher, Geraint Davies, said, “The children have been excited about this project and have enjoyed gathering the items to be included.  They have really used their imaginations.  I was concerned that in 25 years we might have forgotten where the capsule was buried, so the local quarry kindly donated a 7 tonne rock to mark the spot!  We will have a plaque placed on the rock so no-one can forget!”

And the school has just found out that they have been successful in not one but two awards from Investors in People (IIP).

Geraint Davies continues, “We are delighted that we have retained our mainstream IIP award which we have held since 2003, but we are doubly delighted that we are the first school in Denbighshire to be honoured with the Leadership and Management Award, which is a free-standing model looking at the skills of our senior staff in the school as well as the role of the subject leaders and how we manage and encourage emerging talent.”
