Disability Sport Wales’ Clubmark Award

The Conwy Whales’ Annual Swimming Gala took place at Colwyn Leisure Centre at the weekend (03/07/10).

Conwy Whales’ is a disability swimming club, established in 2002, which over 40 young members attend sessions every fortnight.

The Annual Swimming Gala gives the swimmers the opportunity to compete and demonstrate how far they have progressed over the last season. The event also recognises the work of the swimmers, coaches and volunteers over the year.

The Conwy Whales swimming club, the only one of its type in North Wales, also received Disability Sport Wales’ Clubmark Award at the event.

The Clubmark Award is nationally recognised and the Conwy Whales are the first club in North Wales and just the second in the whole of Wales to receive this quality accreditation.

Mark Richards, Disability Sport Wales Development Officer at Conwy Council said, “It was a great day and I’d like to thank all the volunteers for all their hard work throughout the year and their help in making the gala a success.”

Conwy Whales is the only disability specific swimming club in North Wales and caters for children with a variety of disabilities including Downs Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, Global Learning Difficulties, Spinal Dysplasia, translocation of chromosome six, heart defects, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Neurofibromatosis type 1, Kabuki, Hearing impairments, epilepsy and mild to severe learning difficulties.
