Essential maintenance to Foryd Bridge

Essential maintenance work is due to start on the A548 Foryd Road Bridge, Rhyl on 4 October 2010.

Work is to be carried out both above and below road level. Below the deck, the ends of the bridge will be lifted by hydraulic jacks to allow the replacement of the bridge support bearings.  Above deck, the road surface will be removed and a waterproof membrane applied and new asphalt surface laid.  The expansion joints and drainage will also be overhauled.

The work above and below will be carried out at the same time in order to save cost and minimise traffic disruption. It will continue day and night in order to complete it as quickly as possible. Unfortunately traffic restrictions are essential in order to carry out the work safely and single lane working will be in place for the duration; in addition some road closures will be required during critical operations, however these will be limited to night time between midnight and 6am. It is anticipated the night time closures will be required for 3 weeks of the 8 week scheme. The first night time closures will be for the week starting 4 October. Other closures will be advertised in advance on site.

Signs will be put up in advance to warn of all impending traffic restrictions. For the majority of the time pedestrian access on the footpaths on both sides of the carriageway will be maintained, however for short periods it will be necessary to close one of the footpaths to carry out critical operations, the other footpath will remain open. Any footpath closures will be timed to avoid peak periods.

Cabinet Lead member for Environment, Councillor Sharon Frobisher, said: “We know this will cause disruption to motorists and possibly pedestrians but this work is essential and we have done everything possible to minimise disruptions.”

The bridge will be open to normal traffic again on 26 November 2010.
