Sustained action on medicines waste needed

Commenting on the Welsh Assembly Government’s campaign to tackle waste in the medicines budget, Andrew RT Davies AM, Shadow Minister for Health and Social Services, said:

“This campaign highlights a problem that we have known about for some time, but which the Assembly Government has failed to adequately address.

“There is a need to ensure a prescription regime which responds effectively to the needs of patients.  The Assembly Government needs to work closely with community pharmacies to help ensure that patients are being prescribed the correct medicines to meet their needs.  Pharmacists are well-placed to give advice about repeat prescriptions.

“Wales needs a sustained campaign to reduce medicines wastage rather than flash in the pan adverts.”
