Glamorgan Pipped to Promotion

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Swalec Stadium:
Glamorgan 166 & 269-3dec drew with Derbyshire 276 & 123-5

Glamorgan missed out on promotion to LV= County Championship Division One as they were held to a draw by Derbyshire.

Having lost one-and-a-half day’s cricket to rain, Glamorgan struck a deal with Derbyshire to force a result on the final afternoon but couldn’t manage to secure the win they needed.

Derbyshire were set 160 to win in 38 overs and Glamorgan looked to be on course for a dramatic victory when they reduced the visitors to 63-5 in the 22nd over. But stubborn resistance from Robin Petersen (34 not out) and Dan Redfern (29 not out) saw Derbyshire to the close with an unbroken stand of 60.

A draw was the most likely result but that scenario suddenly became insufficient for Glamorgan after Worcestershire struck their own deal with Sussex and chased 301 to beat the Division Two champions. Worcestershire’s victory saw them leapfrog Glamorgan into second place.

Glamorgan had been on the back foot for most of the final match at Cardiff. They had been 66-for-6 on the first morning, only for Jim Allenby’s 57 to recover the innings. Derbyshire then made 276 to take control of the contest. Derbyshire’s generosity in feeding Glamorgan runs to set up a declaration was the only reason the Welsh county got close to victory.

Glamorgan will be very disappointed that their season has finished in such agonising fashion. Failures in the one-day tournaments would have been forgiven with a return to the top flight of first-class cricket but having thrown away a 37-point advantage 2010 has been a poor season for the Welsh County.
