Grants available in digital Gwynedd campaign

Money is available for people living or working in Gwynedd towards improving internet connection in areas where broadband is unavailable.

Individuals, companies or groups of people clubbing together could be eligible for up to £1,000 each towards a broadband connection using alternative means such as 3G, wireless or satellite under the Welsh Assembly Government’s Broadband Support Scheme.

The scheme is aimed at areas which are blighted by internet not-spots – that is, where distance from the nearest telephone exchange means broadband connection via the telephone line is impossible.

Councillor Dyfed Edwards, Leader of Gwynedd Council, said: “The last few years have seen a revolution in terms of our ability to contact each other and use the internet for business, social and leisure activities.

“As a Council we firmly believe that no Gwynedd household or business should be left behind because they live in a not-spot and we would urge people who experience problems to take advantage of this new grant scheme.

“Small businesses and families living in rural areas could benefit enormously from reliable and fast internet access. Many public services can be accessed quicker and more cheaply online, and the web can act as a global shop window for a business no matter where they are.”

As part of its Digital Gwynedd initiative Gwynedd Council is also urging people to complete a questionnaire which will help it understand how people currently use the internet, what problems they may be facing and how good the broadband coverage is in different parts of county. The information will allow the Council to press for better broadband services and to support people and businesses to make full use of the web.

Each business or household in Gwynedd which completes the questionnaire will be entered in a draw to win an iPad.
