Halfpenny: "Complacency cost us"

Leigh Halfpenny admits Cardiff Blues were complacent following their 42-9 pre-season hammering by Northampton Saints.

It was a return to forget for British Lions wing Halfpenny as the Saints’ five-try blitz put the Blues to the sword.

Now the Wales ace, who came through 60 minutes unscathed following a thigh injury, has ordered his team-mates to shape up.

Halfpenny, 20, said: “Possibly we were complacent and it was hugely disappointing – we weren’t good enough in all areas.

“The edge to our game wasn’t there and we must improve. We won’t accept another result or performance like this again but it’s hard to see what positives we can take.”

Blues coach Dai Young warned: “Last season is history – we have to go out and prove ourselves again.”

New signing Sam Norton Knight faces a race to be fit for their Magners League opener against Edinburgh on Friday after the Australian fly-half picked up a hand injury.
