James wins Caerphilly’s Got Talent 2010

Blackwood Miners’ Institute played host to an impressive display of local talent on Saturday 9th October with 15 acts from across the Caerphilly County Borough battling it out to be crowned the 2010 winner of Caerphilly’s Got Talent.

The judges chose 12-year-old James Jones from Caerphilly who wowed them with Frank Sinatra’s My Way on the violin and claimed the title. James won £500 worth of accommodation, theatre and shopping vouchers sponsored by Premier Inn Corbetts Lane Caerphilly.

Second prize went to 18 year old singer Rachel Rajah from Penyrheol who performed her version of Tell me its not True from musical Blood Brothers, a performance truly worthy of the west end. Rachel won a Family Membership to Cadw sites across Wales courtesy of Caerphilly Castle.

Third prize was won by 8 year old dancer Casey Easley from Pwll y Pant who pirouetted around the stage to impress judge Matthew Howells who said that some adult dancers found it hard to perform ballet to the standard Casey displayed. Casey was presented with a digital camera donated by Tesco Caerphilly.

The judges were 2009 Britain’s Got Talent semi finalist Jamie Pugh, BBC Radio Wales DJ Chris Needs, Alastair Britton Lead Singer of band 4th Street Traffic who supported the Stereophonics at the City Stadium in June, Matthew Howells from Beyond Repair Dance who beat thousands of other dance groups from across the UK to successfully make it through to the final 18 semi-finalists and perform live on Sky One’s Got To Dance programme.

The contest was compered by Red Dragon FM DJ Leigh Jones and £104.51was collected on the night for Red Dragon’s charity Help a South Wales Child.

The organisers at Blackwood Miners’ Institute would like to thank all 15 finalists for making it such a fantastic evening of entertainment, to the judges for giving up their time to support the contest and to nearly 100 acts who took time to come out and audition this year. Blackwood Miners’ Institute feels that the contest plays a key role in providing the residents of the borough with an opportunity to take part in a rewarding experience and is looking forward to doing it all over again in 2011.
