Juggling and jet-skis among holiday fun

Jet-ski demonstrations, circus skills workshops and lashings of live music are among the events set to keep boredom at bay over bank holiday weekend and half-term.

Swansea Council is behind an array of entertainment set to cater for all ages and interests as the Swansea Bay Summer Festival gets into full swing in the city.

The Mumbles Navy Days take place from Saturday May 29 to Monday May 31 and feature boat trips, jet-ski displays, knot-tying demonstrations and 280 models of war ships in the main marquee. People can also try their hand at juggling and plate-spinning with guidance from experts during a circus skills workshop at Parkmill’s Gower Heritage Centre on Saturday May 29 from 11am to 4pm.

Additional fun sees the return of Swansea Live to the city centre on Sunday May 30. The event is being organised by Swansea BID and includes jazz, blues, acoustic, rock, pop and indie. Three stages packed with live acts are being set up at Castle Square, Lower Oxford Street and outside the former Woolworths store with music available from noon until 5pm.

The fun then continues into half-term week with activities such as Animal Antics at Plantasia. The event offers children the chance to get up close and personal with creatures such as snakes and lizards and takes place on June 1, June 2 and June 3. Pre-booking is essential because of the event’s popularity by calling Plantasia on 01792 474555.

Several activities have also been lined up as part of the Junior Park Rangers Club and free activities including gymnastics, snorkelling, water polo, trampolining and swimming for under 16s are being made available at Active Swansea leisure centres.

Indoor athletics, kayaking, kung fu, tennis and soccer challenges are among the activities available for a small fee.

Blackpill Lido will also be open from Saturday May 29 to September 2 and the Swansea Bay Rider is up and running from Saturday May 29 everyday until June 6.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “It’s very important we organise a range of indoor and outdoor events because of the unpredictability of the weather here in the UK and our staff have been working hard to put a broad selection of entertainment in place.

“The beauty of this bank holiday weekend and half-term is that there’s something for everyone to enjoy and, if crowds of people aren’t your scene, people should remember the beauty and tranquillity of Gower is within a stone’s throw away.”
