Life on the Land

Work by some of Wales’s most renowned photographers will be shown in an exhibition at Oriel Mwldan, Cardigan from 2 April 2011 – 14 May 2011.

Featuring the work of several Welsh 19th and 20th century photographers such as John Thomas, D.C. Harries and Geoff Charles this exhibition gives a true taste of agricultural life.  The exhibition is on loan by The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth where over 800,000 photographs are part of its collection.

Wales is considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful countries with its combination of peaceful valleys and sturdy mountains. With farming forming an integral part of the history of Wales, there is no doubt that it had a strong influence on the individuals who worked on the land, the communities and on Welsh culture.

Amongst the photographs is a photo by Geoff Charles of Margaret Jones feeding an orphaned lamb, May 14 1959; a line of tractors by P.B. Abery; and a photo by D.C.Harries of a man on a hay-cutting machine.

Oriel Mwldan said:

‘This is a great opportunity for local people to see a unique collection of historic prints. This collection provides a fascinating insight into the rich agricultural history and cultural heritage of our area.’

Jaimie Thomas, Exhibitions Officer at The National Library of Wales said:

‘The National Library of Wales is committed to providing access to its collections and one way of doing so is through showing our archives in other venues.  As part of our outreach programme, we regularly tour exhibitions and individual items to other venues, sometimes working in conjunction with local groups and schools.‘

The photographs on display in Oriel Mwldan have provided inspiration to Richard Higlett and Leona Jones of the West Wales School of Arts, who will be showing their own artworks in response to the exhibition. ‘Song at the Years’ Transforming’ can be seen from the 7 April until the 13 of May at the Gallery, Coleg Sir Gâr’
