Lifeboat rescues stranded family

On Saturday 27 March at 2pm the volunteer crew at the RNLI’s lifeboat station in Burry Port launched to assist a family of four cut off by the incoming tide on Burry Holmes.

The family, who were visiting the area from London, had walked onto Burry Holmes when it was possible to cross the causeway without getting their feet wet. When it was time to return to the beach, they found the causeway had been covered by the incoming tide. They called Swansea Coastguard using their mobile phone, who then requested the launch of the Burry Port RNLI lifeboat.

Due to the sea conditions and the ages of the children it was necessary to bring the family back to the beach one adult and one child at a time. Due to the waves and the swell on Burry Holmes it was necessary to leave a crewmember on the Holmes to assist them into the boat.

The family was transferred onto Rhossili Beach and into the care of a Coastguard unit from Rhossili. The lifeboat was crewed by Gary Morgan, Julian Aston and Dave Taylor.
