Lifeboat saves children cut off by tide

A young boy and girl of 11 from Harlech required assistance from the RNLI Criccieth lifeboat on Sunday, 28 March. The station’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat was launched at 18.05 to a report of two youngsters that had been cut off by the tide at Garreg Goch near to Borth Y Gest.

The volunteer crew soon found the youngsters on a rapidly disappearing sandbank and a rising tide near in the Dwyrd estuary. The children were cold and disorientated and the volunteer crew wrapped them in survival blankets.

Clive Wright, RNLI volunteer helmsman at Criccieth, explains: ‘When we found the youngsters, the water was almost around their feet. By the time we had picked them up, the sandbank had disappeared. The timing of this rescue was essential in saving the lives of these children, as seconds later the scenario could of been a lot worse.’
