Llangefni regeneration plans on show

Plans for the regeneration of Anglesey’s county town are to be unveiled at a major new exhibition.

Llangefni’s residents and businesses are being invited to give their views on a number of regeneration projects exhibited at the Town Hall on March 4th and 6th.

Among the plans on show will be designs for a major refurbishment of the Town Hall itself to create a new events and office complex.

The Llangefni Regeneration Exhibition is organised by the Isle of Anglesey County Council, in partnership with Menter Môn, Llangefni Town Council, Cwmni Tref Llangefni, and Partneriaeth Ward Tudur; and forms part of the North Wales Physical Regeneration Scheme, which is funded through the EU Convergence Programme and Welsh Assembly’s Government’s Môn a Menai programme. It is part of a total investment of £38million across North Wales, with £19m coming from the European Regional Development Fund.

Economic Development portfolio holder, Councillor Bryan Owen, represents Llangefni’s Tudur ward. He stressed, “This is an important event for the future of the town. It will feature recent developments, current schemes, and ones we hope to see come to fruition in the future. We are looking for people’s views on projects, and their comments and ideas about how new funding should be spent. I think people will be impressed with how much there is going on and being invested in the town.”

Local enterprise agency Menter Môn will be showing its plans to adapt Llangefni Town Hall.

Managing Director, Gerallt Llewelyn Jones, explained, “We’ve developed a very exciting plan to transform the building into a vibrant hub for the town centre, bringing more life and activity to the area. Our plan involves the ground floor being used for a variety of activities and events, including local food and crafts. Above that, we are planning to create new office space for ourselves and other business and community support organisations so that they’re based in the heart of the town. We’re now eager to secure public support, together with comments and suggestions about this major new development.”

Welsh Assembly Government Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration Jocelyn Davies AM said: “The investment in Llangefni shows our commitment to regenerating Anglesey. This package of Assembly and European funding will help revitalise the town centre.

“But we need to know what businesses and people in the area want to be delivered and I urge them to attend the meeting so they can play an active part in the future of their area. I am confident that the scheme will deliver long term benefits for the community.”

Plans for the exhibition were agreed in January by the Llangefni Consultative Group, which is made up of various town regeneration stakeholders. The group has also agreed that a joint website will be set up as a single portal for information about the town and its regeneration.

The Llangefni Regeneration Exhibition will be held on Thursday 4th March 10am-4pm and on Saturday 6th March 10am-1pm. The exhibition will be held on both market days, and will be located alongside the regular indoor market.
