Bluebirds fly into community scheme

Young people from Caerphilly county borough brushed up on their football skills last week, thanks to a series of football workshop sessions from coaches at Cardiff City FC.

The young people aged between seven and 18 took part in the workshops at Graig Y Rhacca Resource Centre, which provided them with a fun, positive activity to occupy their spare time this half term.

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education and leisure said, “Initiatives such as this are excellent in that they provide a fun and educational activity for local young people to take part in over the half term period.

“As well as this, they also help to develop important skills such as discipline and teamwork, which will no doubt be beneficial to the young people as they progress into their adult lives.”

The workshops were organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council Youth Service The Hub team’s Andrew Griffiths, together with Graig Y Rhacca Resource Centre’s Manager, Istvan Racz.

The young people were put through their paces by Cardiff City FC coaches, and took part in fitness drills, skills sessions and team games.

They also learned about healthy lifestyles and basic first aid, and had the opportunity to visit Cardiff City Stadium for a tour of the ground.

An average of 38 young people came along each day throughout half term.

One young person who took part in the scheme said, “I had a great time taking part in the football course. If I hadn’t taken part in this, I probably would have just been hanging round the streets every day over half term. I think it’s really good that activities like this has been organised for young people to take part in.”
