Make a Splash for 2012 – Free Adult Swimming Lessons

If learning to swim is high on your list of New Year resolutions, Cardiff Council’s Aquatic Development team are launching a brand new adult swimming programme this January.

The initiative will give people the opportunity to learn to swim and improve their confidence in the water, absolutely free of charge.

Lessons will be delivered by fully qualified experienced Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), Level 2 swimming teachers and will follow the ASA Adult Learn to Swim framework.

Teachers will guide and work with adults by teaching a range of skills and basic strokes during each lesson.

Participants will also be given the exciting opportunity to overcome the fear of water and embark on a new life skill.

Swimming is a fantastic way to keep fit and help lose weight. It can also be a great way for people to engage with their children and grandchildren whilst making new friends.

The eight week programme is available to 120 residents on a first come first served basis and lessons will take place during weekday evenings with a maximum of 12 people enrolled on each course.

Participating facilities include Eastern Leisure Centre, Western Leisure Centre, Llanishen Leisure Centre and Pentwyn Leisure Centre.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “This new initiative is an excellent way to encourage more adults across our city to learn how to swim.

“Swimming is a low impact sport which can improve health and wellbeing and is accessible to everyone.”

“This will give those who have not had the opportunity to learn in the past, those who have a fear of water or are embarrassed about learning to swim the prospect of participating and enjoying a new skill which they will benefit from for the rest of their lives.”

Cardiff Council is the only Learn to Swim provider in Wales to hold the ASA Swim21 Accreditation.

The Swim21 accreditation is the ASA ‘quality mark’ awarded to those aquatic providers who provide the best swimming experience for all and who continually raise the quality of swimming provision across all areas.

The aquatic programme is Swim21 assessed annually by the ASA.

Courses will run for eight weeks from the week commencing Monday 16, January 2012.

To enrol on the programme, interested participants will need to call Eastern Leisure Centre on 029 20796616 on Monday 9, January between 10.00am and 18.00pm to book a space.

For those participants who complete the course and wish to progress to the following level, Cardiff Council will offer the next block of eight lessons at half price.
