Monmouthshire Trading Standards officers issue online computer support warning

Monmouthshire’s Trading Standards officers are warning Internet users to be wary of unsolicited telephone calls about spurious computer problems.

These warnings follow complaints from residents who have received calls from people claiming to work for online computer technical support websites.  The callers allege that users’ computers are infected with a virus and ask for consumers to log on so that they can assist.  They will then seek to remotely access computers leaving them free to obtain personal information.

Other scams include requests for credit card information, and an aggressive, persistent sales pitch aimed at convincing consumers to buy security software and technical support.  These rogue callers use scare tactics alleging that computers would be damaged beyond repair unless consumers signed up within 15 minutes.

Consumers are targeted at random.  Internet research into these companies has revealed that operations of this type are widespread with some callers purporting to represent the Microsoft corporation.

Officers urge computer users to be vigilant and advise that effective online security is crucial.  In addition, users should ensure that their PCs are running up-to-date anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software.  However, good security need not be complicated or expensive – many security vendors provide free versions of their software for personal use.  Officers advise PC users to read about online security via the website www.getsafeonline.org.
