Multi-cultural event in Amlwch

A fun-packed event was held on Anglesey yesterday (Monday 1st March) to help raise awareness of different cultures.

The event, held at ‘Sbri Môn’ in Amlwch saw people come together to sample food dishes from various cultures as well as listen to local school pupils sing songs on the theme of St David’s Day.

Organised by Communities First, with assistance from Medrwn Môn and other agencies such as North Wales Police and the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the free multi-cultural event was arranged to help build stronger community relations.

Assisting on the day was PCSO Dennis Owen from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

He said: “The aim of the day was to recognise and celebrate diversity. It was also an opportunity to dispel any myths and promote engagement and inclusion.”

A wide range of information was also on hand regarding the services available from various agencies such as Communities First, Parys Training and the Red Cross.

North Wales Police were also handing out crime prevention advice and the Fire and Rescue Service were on-hand promoting their free home fire safety checks.

Carli Evans-Thaw from Amlwch Communities First said: “This was a very successful event and we were very pleased with the response from the community.

“We wanted to encourage people from across the local community and it was a good opportunity to promote the ‘Sbri Môn’ play centre and what it has to offer.”

Pupils from Ysgol Rhosybol also entertained the crowd and people were given the opportunity to sample the traditional Welsh ‘lobsgows’ and welsh cakes, with various curry dishes also on the menu for those who wanted to try something different.

This event follows-on from a similar successful scheme in Menai Bridge – where multi-cultural events are held on a regular basis at the Thomas Telford Centre.

Ann Perkins, Health and Social Care Facilitator for Medrwn Môn, who has been involved with the project in Menai Bridge said: “These events are great to integrate people who live in the community as well as providing a more cohesive community feeling.

“It was a wonderful afternoon with plenty to do and see and we very much hope further similar events will be held in the near future.”
