Neath Food and Drink Festival 2009

Neath’s first ever Food and Drink festival looks set to be a spectacular event.

The festival which is taking place on Saturday 24th October will be opened by Adam Jones, the Neath, Ospreys, Wales and British Lion forward who will also spend time with school children and take part in a Q & A session.

With over 30 traders from Neath Port Talbot and surrounding areas signed up to the event it promises to be an extravaganza.

The event which is being broadcast ‘live’ by Swansea Bay Radio will host a similar layout to the historic Neath September Fair. It will offer a range of stalls that will line the streets of Neath which will start at the top of Green Street down to ‘Next’ square and through New Street onto Angel Square by Morrisons.

These will include a number of traders from the Victorian Indoor Market selling fruit and vegetables, welsh cakes, laverbread and cockles, sausages, bacon, cheeses and cooked meats, faggots and peas, herbs, vegetables and bulbs.

There will also be a range of independent traders from Neath and other areas, including La Creme Patisserie, Penderyn Whisky, Fiona’s Fudge, Pemberton’s Chocolate Farm, Indian Cuisine and Trophy Foods who sell a variety of vegetarian foods.

Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, said, “We have had tremendous support and interest from the local community and other areas and everybody seems to want to get involved. All the local traders are completely behind the event and we have a good mix of products to showcase the best of Welsh produce.

“With Neath already hosting its famous annual September Fair, this event promises to be yet another showcase to attract residents and visitors to Neath Port Talbot.”

There will also be street entertainment with face painting and stilt walkers, and Angel Square will host an array of health, well being and fitness events. These will include Call of the Wild, Neath Rugby, Celtic Leisure and Community Groups such as the allotment society, Melin Ramblers and many more.

Other stalls will include Neath Port Talbot Catering College, Communities First, Neath Port Talbot CVS, Dove Workshops and the Bluebell Hotel and the Castle Hotel.

St David’s Church will also be open to the public with local chefs providing cookery demonstrations and a stall promoting Fair Trade products. Neath Community Centre will play host to children’s workshops that will demonstrate cup cake decorating and making fruit kebabs.

The Festival will take place between 10-5pm on Saturday (24th October). For further information you can log onto www.neathfoodfestival.co.uk or the council’s website www.npt.gov.uk.
