Official opening of new look Corris footpath

An idyllic riverside footpath in Corris in south Meirionnydd will be re-opened later this month following improvement work.

The upgrade of the popular footpath along Afon Dulas is part of Gwynedd Council’s programme of improvements undertaken on the county’s footpaths. This particular footpath had been damaged due to high water levels over the years, but work undertaken by Gwynedd Council’s Meirionnydd Area Highways Works Service has improved drainage at the site and aims to safeguard the path from erosion.

The improvements have been funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Rights of Way Improvement Plan Grant, administered by the Countryside Council for Wales, and helps to implement the actions identified in Gwynedd’s Rights of Way Improvement Plan.

Aled Davies, Head of Gwynedd Council’s Regulatory Department said:

“These improvements in Corris will help to make our footpaths more accessible for members of the public so that they can keep active and enjoy our fantastic natural resources.

“Officers from Gwynedd Council’s Rights of Way team have worked closely with landowners, local residents, the Community Council and Public Health Wales to deliver this important project. We hope that local residents along with visitors to the Corris area make the most of the new and improved footpath which takes in some stunning scenery along Afon Dulas.”

Melfyn Thomas, Senior Public Health Practitioner, Public Health Wales added:

“Over the last year or so, the Corris community has been working with a number of agencies to identify and improve a number of aspects of community life in and around the village. This new-look footpath is an important addition to the resources available to people locally – I hope that this can be the start of Corris residents identifying and seeking to effect changes in health, social and physical aspects of life in the area.”

The improvements to the footpath include: wooden fingerposts; new gates; local slate- based boulders to stabilise the river bank and a surface dressing of finer slate.

The newly improved riverside footpath in Corris will be officially opened on Tuesday, 20 April. Those wishing to attend the opening should meet at Institiwt, Corris at 11am.
