Police repeat abandoned baby appeal

One week since the discovery of a newborn baby boy at the rear of the Spar Store, Newport Road, Cwmcarn at 6.15pm last Thursday (March 18th) officers are re-appealing for information in an effort to identify the baby’s mother or anyone who may have any knowledge of the incident to come forward.

Officers are returning to the Spar Store, Newport Road, Cwmcarn this morning (Thursday March 25th) to speak to residents and hand out leaflets in the hope that someone may have information to help the investigation.

Another image of an item found with the baby, who officers have named Patrick, has been released today: a light blue fleece blanket, described as approximately 70cm x 85 cm in size with curved corners, stitched edges and with a “Baby Bear” motif in one of the corners. Officers had already released some images of Patrick’s clothing as well as two towels he was wrapped in, including:

•    A bath size towel bought from Dunelm. The towel is white with a gingerbread man and heart design on it
•    A blue and white striped long sleeve top, with buttons at the neck, aged 3-6 months from Next (this is part of a three piece set)
•    An orange beach towel manufactured by Arencibia, an outlet based on Gran Canaria

A George orange vest top, size 14 was also left with the baby.

Gwent Police received a call from the ambulance service and attended the scene at the Spar Store where they discovered the newborn baby wrapped in a towel. The baby was transferred by ambulance to the Royal Gwent Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A post mortem has been carried out which was inconclusive

Superintendent Jon Burley, Caerphilly Local Policing Unit said:
“We are continuing our investigation and, again, would like to reiterate that our main concern lies with the health and well being of the mother who may need support physically and undoubtedly, emotionally.

We continue to appeal for information in an effort to identify the mother of the baby, who we have named Patrick as we believe he would have been born on or around St Patrick’s Day, or for anyone who has information that may help the investigation. We are quite sure that someone out there has an idea of who she is – she must have been very heavily pregnant until recently.

The images we have released are of quite distinctive items. While the Next top and the white towel look new, so they must have been bought very recently, the blue fleece blanket doesn’t look new, so we would appeal to anyone who might have given it to a charity shop or perhaps have put it into a car boot sale to contact us. The orange towel could perhaps have been brought back from a holiday on Gran Canaria recently. Anyone with information, however small, should get in touch.

We have received a lot of support from the community so far and we would ask that this continues. This is a tragic incident and our priority remains to find Patrick’s mother ,”

Police would also ask anyone with concerns about somebody they know, a friend or member of their family who they think could possibly be connected to this incident to contact them as soon as possible.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwent Police on 101.
