Putting the Breaks on Illegal Drivers

Police forces across Wales will be putting the brakes on illegal motorists during a two-week campaign which has been launched today (Tuesday, 19th of October).

As part of the crackdown against those who drive whilst disqualified, drive with no insurance or drive without a valid licence, officers from the four Welsh forces – Gwent, South Wales, Dyfed Powys and North Wales will be out and about targeting those who flout the law.

Gwent Police Roads Policing Inspector Lee Ford said:

“Over the next two weeks officers will be targeting those driving illegally on our roads, and raising awareness amongst the driving community about the necessity of up to date and valid driving documents. Neglecting your responsibility as a motorist to have these is criminal behaviour which will not be tolerated.

“I would urge anyone who knows of someone driving illegally in Gwent to contact us with their details as soon as possible. We have extensive powers, which for some offences include the power to arrest and seize vehicles; lessening the safety risk to the majority of motorists in Gwent who are completely law-abiding.

“To report an illegal driver to Gwent Police please call 01633 838111, in an emergency always dial 999.”

Assistant Chief Constable Nick Croft from South Wales Police who chairs the All Wales Roads Policing Joint Advisory Group added;

“This kind of policing is about denying criminals use of the roads, saving the ordinary driver from higher insurance premiums and reducing road casualties.

“Driving without insurance and the appropriate driving documents is not only damaging to the Welsh economy, but also socially unacceptable. The progress made so far by the police to reduce the levels of uninsured and illegal drivers is significant.

“By working together we can present an even stronger barrier against criminal behaviour, making the perpetrators’ life difficult, preventing the spread of crime, and ultimately bring criminals to justice.”

During the campaign officers will be utilising ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology and they will also be working closely with their colleagues at the DVLA and Motor Insurance Bureau.
