More than 100 primary schoolgirls recently took part in the annual Girls Pembrokeshire Kwik Cricket Festival at Haverfordwest Cricket Club.
The participation from 11 primary schools reflects a growing interest in the sport among girls in Pembrokeshire.
The pupils who took part were from Ysgol Wdig, Mary Immaculate School, Stackpole VC School, Haverfordwest VC School, Stepaside CP School, St Teilo’s Catholic Primary School, Llangwm VC School, Prendergast CP School, Coastlands School, Tavernspite CP School, and Broad Haven Primary School.
The festival was organised in Pembrokeshire by Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of the County Council – in association with the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches.
Designed to increase interest in the sport among youngsters, Kwik cricket uses an orange softball and plastic equipment and can be played on any flat surface inside or out.
The final was played between Mary Immaculate School and Tavernspite CP School. Mary Immaculate came out on top in an extremely competitive match.
Both schools will go on to represent Pembrokeshire in the South Wales Finals at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff on July 5th.
Cricket Development Officer Matt Freeman said: “It’s great to see the number of schools participating in the annual festival continuing to rise.
“It’s also good to see a high standard of cricket being played with some really competitive and enjoyable matches.”
Cllr Rob Lewis said: “It’s always excellent to see youngsters enjoying and taking part in sport, and the fact that more schools participated in the festival this year bodes very well for the future of girls’ cricket.”
