Swimmers start summer training

Pembrokeshire’s top young swimmers took part in a special summer skills camp last weekend.

Twenty one of the best swimmers from five County clubs pooled their talent at Fishguard Leisure Centre on Saturday May 1st.

The training camp was the first in a series of three summer camps organised by Pembrokeshire Leisure – Pembrokeshire County Council’s leisure arm.

It follows three winter camps held at Milford Haven in October, Crymych in January and Pembroke in February.

The nine to 12 year-olds were put through their paces by Paul Dowey, Pembrokeshire Leisure’s swimming development coach

“I am delighted to see that so many new faces have made it into the squad,” said Paul Dowey.

“These young swimmers, and the volunteers who train them, have   worked hard in their respective clubs.”

The skills camps are designed for youngsters who already swim competitively with their local clubs – Haverfordwest Seals, Milford Haven Tigers, Pembroke & District, Tenby Dolphins and Fishguard Flyers.

Youngsters are selected for the skills squad based on their 200m individual medley event results.

Anyone interested in joining a competitive swimming club should contact their local leisure centre.
