The ‘Odd Couple Of The Valleys’ Are Brought To The Stage At Theatr Mwldan

A new stage version of an Oscar nominated film is brought to life this month, as ‘ELWYN’ is performed at   Mwldan, Cardigan  on 15th May at 7.30pm. Directed and adapted by the renowned director Michael Bogdanov, ‘Elwyn’ is a hilarious tale of two men adjusting to living in the outside world, after years spent in institutions.

Best described as the ‘Odd Couple of the Valleys’, the two main protagonists are 40 something Mummy’s boy Elwyn (played by Russell Gomer) and his room-mate, the uncouth, reluctant virgin Kelly (Ieuan Rhys).  Moving into an apartment with the gentle support of social services, their mission is to re-assimilate themselves into society. All they have to do is convince their social worker that they really are ‘normal’, even if it does feel safer sleeping in a wardrobe…   ‘Elwyn’ charts their bumps and stumbles as they make their way back into a world others take for granted.

The play is humorously touching and heart-warmingly funny, as audiences follow Elwyn and Kelly as they build new friendships, become accustomed to all things ordinary and start to experience the pleasure of the everyday.

The play is based on the cult Oscar nominated Norwegian film ‘Elling’, derived from the novel ‘Blood Brothers’ by Ingvar Ambjørnsen. The original stage version received an Olivier Nomination and a Stage Award for the best Comedy 2007, and now Michael Bogdanov has created a version of the play set in Wales.  It is produced by Wales Theatre Company, in association with Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Tickets for Elwyn are £13 (£11) and are available to book now from Mwldan’s Box office on 01239 621200, online at, or via Smartphones by visiting
