Welsh Wine Given International Recognition

Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM has congratulated Welsh Wine producers Ancre Hill Estates after it won two international Wine Awards at the London international Wine Fair 2010, for its first ever vintage, a 2008 White Welsh Regional Wine.

A Silver Medal was awarded in the Decanter World Wine Awards and a Bronze Medal in the International Wine and Spirit Competition.  The Plaid Cymru AM, who as Chair of the Rural Affairs Sub-Committee is currently overseeing a study into Welsh Beers, Ciders, Wines and Spirits, will be holding an event at the Sennedd to mark this success and highlight the award winning Welsh produce.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM added:

“This is a fantastic achievement for Richard and the Ancre Hill Estate Vineyard.  These are hugely prestigious awards and for a Welsh Wine producer to win them is an excellent reflection on the standard of produce we have here in Wales.

I strongly believe that across a range of food and drink Wales has some of the world’s best produce and we must champion these high standards.”

Richard Morris of Ancre Hill Estates commented:

“2008 was a difficult season weather-wise and an interesting challenge in producing our first ever vintage. Our brilliant site, meso-climate and our ability to remain disease free through fastidious canopy management and a carefully planned spray programme was the key to the quality of this wine. I must also pay tribute to our winemakers at Three Choirs.”
